niqabOver the past few weeks, the 2015 federal election has become increasing politicized. One of the latest issues is evolving around Zunera Ishaq who has refused to remove her niqab during the public swearing-in ceremony for her citizenship. Under the Conservative government, a policy introduced in December 2011, requires all participants seeking Canadian citizenship to be completely seen while taken the Oath. Ishaq’s case and the September 15, 2015 decision of the Federal Court of Appeal to upheld a decision made by a Federal Court judge who ruled against the federal government on the issue, has brought more light to the sensitive issue.

Several commentators have noted that the NDP has taken a significant drop in the Quebec polls that could be directly associated with Muclair’s vocal opposition on the ban on niqabs and burkas. Interestingly, the Liberals have not seem to have affected by Trudeau’s opposition of the ban.

Insider’s Guide Commentary: Quebec is a very important province in elections. In the last federal elections, there was a large support base for the NDP. Unfortunately, it seems that at present, the NDP is losing ground in Quebec.  A recent and unsuccessful attempt by the Parti Quebecois to ban religious symbols in the public service is still on the minds of many Quebecers. There are 20 more days left until Election Day 2015, the polls can still change. This week’s political French debate may or may not affect the NDP in Quebec (and Canada).
