election 2015

With 20 days left until Election Day, the Liberals and the NDP continue fighting for the votes of the public service. The NDP has announced promises to halt further spending reviews or job cuts to the already fragile public service.

The announcement comes four days after Justin Trudeau’s “open letter” to public servants which addressed certain issues of concern such as sick leave, mental health, and the elimination of the long form census. While the Liberals have stated that savings in the budget will be found without any additional cuts to the public servants, the NDP believes that the Liberals’ spending review and their plan to reduce the size of administration National Defence implies further cuts.

Insider’s Guide Commentary: Both the Liberals and the NDP desperately need the votes of the federal public service as many are weighing the pros and cons of each party. Any elimination of programs and services created by the Conservative government will result in the loss of positions; however, this does not necessarily mean that these public servants will lose their jobs in the government. It has occurred in the past that programs have been sunsetted within a department, and individuals who worked in these programs have been moved to other positions within a department. In the event that the Liberals or NDP form the next government, it will be imperative to ensure that vicious trend of government cuts initiated by the Conservative is halted.
