Congratulations! You made it to the Government of Canada interview. By this point of time, you should be comfortable with general questions  may be asked on the department that has contacted you for an interview.

Oral Interview timeline

Why a timeline?

As I mention in my book, after researching various resources on securing a job in the Canadian government, I could not find a book that offers a comprehensive guide on how to prepare for interviews in the Goverment of Canada.

The timeline that I am providing here, is exactly how I prepared and got chosen for numerous external and internal competitions. It is also how I advise my colleagues and their friends to prepare for interviews.

Most job applicants do not prepare sufficiently for a federal government interview which is completely different from the majority of interviews in the private sector. My approach consists
of walking into an oral exam, providing government hiring managers with the exact information that they want and observe while they nod their heads and frantically write to take notes on what I am saying. When the interview is finished, I follow-up, and wait for my job offer.

2 days prior to your exam

• Memorize your prepared study sheet of information. Also, look at the cover letter that you prepared, your resume, and the Statement of Merit Criteria. They will  give you a good idea of what will be asked in the interview.

• Become familiar with your pre-formulated answers but do not memorize them, you do not want to have “scripted” answers in the interview.

• Find at least two alternative routes to get to your interview than your original plan.

In my book you will find more detailed steps for success in your Government of Canada interview.
